The Mares of Mossrose Morgans

Mossrose Ysabella

2006 Smoky Cream Mare ~ 100% Foundation Bloodlines

AMHA No. 171998 ~ Coat Color Tested Eeaa

We never planned on a smoky cream, but here she is!  Foaled May 21, 2006, Bella was an arrival to look forward to. This cross had been in my mind for quite some time, so her birth was a celebration.

Bella's sire is the well known reiner and Breyer model, Montana Harvest  Her mother was the lovely Whippoorwill Salus, a Californio daughter.   Bella has an in-your-pocket personality.  Her stride at the walk and trot is long and reaching. She has a wonderful working canter. In our humble opinion, her conformation is outstanding.  She is well trained for western riding and is a pleasant mare to work with!  She has a no muss, no fuss attitude toward most everything, but is by no means dull.  She tries hard to be obedient, mannerly and to do anything asked of her. She is, without a doubt, the smoothest horse at all three gaits that I have ever ridden. From the beginning she has always worked very naturally off of her hindquarters. She was worked on cattle one summer, but reining may be her true calling. Bella is, plain and simple, an all around excellent working mare. Bella is currently one of our main broodmares. Crossed with Whippoorwill Newmoon, she has produced high quality colts. They are the buckskins Mossrose Moon Shadow, Mossrose Golden Ridge and Mossrose Juneau, the smoky black Mossrose Iron River and the palomino Mossrose Kings Bluff. Bella, following in her dam's footsteps, is an excellent mother.

Mossrose Dandy Jewel

2011 Seal Brown Mare ~ 100% Foundation Bloodlines

AMHA No. 183851 ~ Coat Color Tested EeAta

Jewel is the most lovely and most elegant mare on the farm. She has the beautiful seal brown color and striking features of her sire, reining champion Whippoorwill Newmoon. She also has acquired the lovely grace and elegance of her dam, the beautiful black Whippoorill Halo who is sired by Sereno Dandy Vermont and out of the mortgage lifter mare, Whippoorwill Corona. Jewel is a goldmine of rare old blood, so will be retained as one of our main broodmares.

Like all of our Morgans, Jewel has an excellent work ethic and tries hard to please. She was started under saddle and is a smooth, big strided mover. Jewel stands 15.1H.

Whippoorwill Skysthelimit

2012 Black Mare ~ 100% Foundation Bloodlines

AMHA No. 185433

Miss Sky was a special gift born into the last foal crop of the 67 year old Whippoorwill Morgans breeding program in Old Lyme, Connecticut in 2012. She is an absolutely gorgeous black mare embodying the characteristics Whippoorwill Morgans are known for. Sky carries several generations of classic Morgans carefully and mindfully bred by emeritus breeder, Mary Jean Vasiloff. We are honored to have Miss Sky in our herd. She is a wonderful riding mare, being used at a girls riding academy as well as several miles of mountain riding in Virginia before coming to Mossrose Morgans. This mare is closely related to most of our herd, so is the perfect fit.

Sky stands 15H tall. We have used her for western riding, dressage and working equitation. In 2024, she gave us a big tall handsome sport colt by Westwind Montana Sky. We enjoy having Sky around as she is quite easy for everything and most anyone can ride her. She is very friendly, curious and under saddle she tries hard to please. If you are familiar with the Whippoorwill Morgans, you will find this mare to be a classic quality example of the breeding.

Mossrose Fiesta Gold

2013 Palomino Mare ~ 100% Foundation Bloodlines

AMHA No. 186832 ~ Coat Color Tested eeaa

I wish I could come up with the appropriate words and some perfect pictures to describe Fiesta. She is simply amazing. The one thing we noticed about her right away is that she is something special and she knows it! From the beginning we have gotten a big kick out of watching her play. I have never seen a foal with so much expression in her ability. She could play the dressage role quite easily with big, lofty gaits and that added suspension we love to see. But if you turn your head for an instant and then look back, she will be running circles full tilt with her head and neck lowered and her ears back like a cowhorse. It is just something brilliant to witness! At 3 months old Fiesta was doing her dressage and cowhorse moves as well as easily jumping logs and piles of brush while going uphill in her pasture. Now did we see the eventing and hunter/jumper side of this mare coming through as well?! I'm quite certain this girl is tops in ability!

Fiesta is a sweet mare that loves scratches and hugs. She always comes up for attention. She's especially good at following behind as close as possible in the pasture without the human realizing, hoping she doesn't miss out on any attention. She is a sooty palomino with a good supply of dapples. Another thing that stands out about Fiesta is her size. She is 15.3H tall. Fiesta has proven to be a willing partner for showing as well. We are using her for western dressage, working equitation, ranch riding classes and 2 person cattle sorting. She is always ready, willing and able to get the job done!

We are thankful to have gotten this lovely filly! Natalia is a real treasure of old bloodlines. She is a super mover, very bold and in your pocket friendly. Talia is growing now, but will fit in perfectly with the current happenings and future plans of Mossrose Morgans.

Heritage Hollow Liberty

2020 Palomino Mare ~ 100% Foundation Bloodlines

AMHA No. 199061 ~ Coat Color Tested eeAa

One day while I was at Heritage Hollow Morgans in North Branch, Minnesota, this cute filly came up and wanted to meet me. I got to experience the American Morgan Horse Association slogan, "The horse that chooses you." Libby chose me that day! I worked with her and was quite impressed with her training to date, as well as her abilities, willingness and try. Libby wasn't really for sale, but Renee and I quickly came to an agreement, I wrote out the check and put her in the trailer. John, myself and our riders all love Libby. She is very easy to have around, fun to work with and a cute mover. She fits in good for our Working Equitation practices. A few different people have ridden her for obstacle practice and enjoyed her. She is just 14H, but an athletic powerhouse. She is just the type of horse I like to ride. Willing, agile and fun!

Singingheart Shiloh

2022 Chestnut Mare ~ 100% Foundation Bloodlines

AMHA No. 206932

Thank you to Donna DeAmaral for breeding this mare and saving her for me. Shiloh is by the 15.3H black stallion, OGO Luna Illuminati. Illuminati carries some great old Brunk and working western Morgan breeding. With Illuminati I particularly wanted to bring forward the blood of one of the early talented Morgan Grand Prix dressage horses, Whippoorwill Ebony. This was only the third foal born that was sired by Illuminati - and he was 17 years old! His first foal, by the way, was Mossrose North Star, foaled when Illuminati was 16 years old. You can see that this is an important mare for our program. Illuminati is available via frozen semen through Donna DeAmaral. Email or call and I will put you in touch with her. Donna is professional, attentive and easy to work with.

We will train Shiloh to ride and hope to cross her back on the Whippoorwill bloodlines to move that blood forward. Shiloh is so very sweet! She may seem like a plain wrapper to many, but getting to know her has been a joy. I'm not sure I have ever described a horse as cuddly, but if I had to, she would be it! She has great heart and try, which makes her such a pleasure to work with. I expect her to make it to 15.2H. She is naturally left leaded, which is neat to see! Have you noticed how many Morgans have a tendency to favor the right lead? I'm not sure why that is. My husband, who loves team roping, always picks up on the horses that are naturally left leaded and we have only had a couple in all of our years with Morgans. Anyway, Shiloh is going to be one neat using horse and I can hardly wait to get to that point!

In Memory of Whippoorwill Salus

1986 to 2015

Palomino Mare ~ 100% Foundation Bloodlines

AMHA No. 104663

The Grand Mare, Whippoorwill Salus!    You may have heard of her!
Whippoorwill Salus was a daughter of Californio, and out of the lovely Whippoorwill Duke daughter, Whippoorwill Pazazz. Californio was a dappled palomino stallion foaled in 1967. He was National Cutting Horse Champion at the first Morgan Grand National! His disposition was second to none. He had the willingness, heart and try to make him a truly versatile Morgan Horse. Californio's blood still runs today through the veins of many Mossrose prefixed Morgans. His gentle, willing disposition, sweet, kind temperment, correct conformation and winning ability show up strongly in his descendants. Whippoorwill Pazazz, by Whippoorwill Duke, had a sweet, willing and mellow personality which she always passed on to her offspring. Pazazz had her last foal for Whippoorwill Morgans at the age of 25.

I can't even begin to speak of the quality of Whippoorwill Salus. She has ability, a disposition of gold as well as the inner and outer beauty that make her one in a million. So many words could describe her, but most simply she was the consumate example of a broodmare. Salus was bred and raised by Mary Jean Vasiloff of Whippoorwill Morgans. While with Mary Jean, Salus was trained for riding and used in many Whippoorwill Morgans Versatility Events and open barns. Salus was the favorite mount for Mary Jean's grand-daughter, Shauna. Shauna is the one in the saddle on many of the pictures of Salus with a rider. Salus raised several quality foals that carry the Whippoorwill prefix before coming to Mossrose Morgans in 2003 at the age of 17. We have retained one Salus daughter carrying the Mossrose prefix as well as a grand-daughter and grandson. We had three Salus daughters and two sons at one time. The Salus daughters are highly acclaimed. All of them are lovely to look at with breathtaking movement. We never dreamed we would be blessed with such a grand mare as Whippoorwill Salus in our herd!
